An Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book a place to stay when I arrived, however upon reaching the city, a large conference was happening and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and found myself drifting near the casino, believing I might spend the night in an establishment that stayed open all night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused because a woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my situation and without hesitation she said I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still very grateful.

I never did study at ANU, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
