An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
