Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of space.
The group of women also included experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
