One of the co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner

This latest development escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen announced via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions

The founder revealed how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
