Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
