French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.

This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.

"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."

Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.

Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.

The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which ceased when the previous government official left government.

That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.

Now French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.

Strong winds are presently postponing the start of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
