Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
