The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
