Similar to bad weather swept through the north-west the prior day, the home side blew United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for Manchester United

This result signalled back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them seven points off the top team with their title hopes severely dented.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle domestic and European soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they looked tired throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to rotate the squad with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer loading concerns. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to gather for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the power from City whose energetic offense controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a superb opening period display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

Final Period

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a excellent Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to beat any team who ended above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a favorable situation after nine games.
