The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
