Unbowed Wilfried Nancy does not fear dismissal yet supporters show anger following defeat.
Wilfried Nancy insisted he had no concerns about the sack, asserting, “The team is really close to changing our fortunes,” in the wake of edging perilously close to being fired with a convincing setback against Rangers.
A Second-Half Collapse Results in Old Firm Disaster
Celtic were in front Rangers at the break but a collapse after the break allowed Rangers to pull level on points with the defending Scottish Premiership champions. Nancy, who was brought in from the MLS, has now presided over six setbacks in his last eight fixtures.
“There is unity with the board,” said Nancy.
Questioned about his own future, Nancy said: “It’s not on my mind. My focus is on discovering solutions to get the team to improve on small moments.
Supporters' Anger Outside Parkhead
The fans voiced their fury – aimed at the dugout and directors – in their hundreds at Parkhead. Club directors would be most likely to bring back Martin O’Neill, who had a fruitful temporary stint before Nancy was hired, should a change be made.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the truth for the moment. But in stating this is the reality, that is not a sign that I am giving up. No. My point is we are really close, extremely close to turn things around.”
Nancy’s Persistent Belief
The coach highlights the fact Celtic show good levels for a half at a time. Indeed, were it not for poor finishing they would have been more than 1-0 up. “There were positives other than the fact that we haven’t scored a second goal,” he said. “I acknowledge that we lost, but I must remain balanced.
“The performance we had at times was exceptionally high. This is the reality. I could not say that if it was untrue. That is the reason, in terms of results, I mentioned we've seen this before. That’s why I believe we are really close to things turning around. But for the moment: small things.”
“There were many, many good things that we did, like today again. However is sustaining it. My narrative would not be if I didn't believe it. That’s why I am convinced the team can to get back on track.”
The Rangers Boss Response
Rangers manager refused to contemplate a serious challenge despite what seemed like a statement victory. “We take it game by game, so we can gradually build a challenge,” he said. “The belief in the team is outstanding.”
